This 18th century map of Surrey by Antonio Zatta is hand coloured and very detailed.

Engraved by Pitteri and drawn by Zuliani it was published in 1779 by Antonio Zatta in Atlante Novissimo.

Antonio Zatta:

A Venitian cartographer who completed his best known publication Atlante Novissimo by 1785, this comprised of 218 maps including provincial maps of Europe and although he never produced an atlas of British county maps it did include Essex, Kent, Middlesex and Surrey as well as regions of Ireland and Scotland.

He also produced decorative maps after Captain Cook (Austrailia and New Zealand) and a twelve sheet sectional version of Mitchell's large-scale map of the USA, 1755. A characteristic of Zatta's maps are the decorative title cartouches. Also produced Nuovo atlante in 1799. Other cartographers work which he interpreted include Robert de Vaugondy and Bellin.

Old Map of London

Fascinating old map of London, published by J. Reynolds in 1846.  There are many contemporary notes and anecdotes.









Antique maps of London come in many different formats, but not many have personal annnotations as does this folding map by Booth.


Bold imprint, laid on linen, some wear at folds, original hand colouring. Many ink and pencil inscriptions by the owner Richard Matthews (mid to late 19th century). Also contemporary newspaper articles and adverts attached to the map.

Original Antique Map of Surrey by John Speed

John Speed (1552-1629)

Born at Farndon in Cheshire and followed his father's trade as a tailor. By 1584 he had moved to London with his wife (Susanna who bore twelve sons and six daughters) and been made a Freeman of Merchant Tailors in 1580.

He was a keen amateur historian and map maker, producing maps for the Merchant Tailors in 1598. Became a member of the Society of Antiquaries where it is likely that he came into contact with leading historians of the day such as Sir Robert Cotton, William Camden, whose text he had read, and perhaps even Christopher Saxton. His interests came to the notice Sir Fulke Greville who made an allowance so that he should be free to write a history of England and, by courtesy of Queen Elizabeth, he worked from a room in the Custom House.

A good historian, he was a great gatherer of information 'I have put my sickle to other men's corne'. Most of his map material was copied from Saxton: however, John Norden (c.1548-1625)) and William Smith (c.1550-1618) had produced maps of some countries and Gerard Mercator maps of the regions. Yet Speed must have travelled extensively, for his maps go well beyond those of his predecessors. By including the hundreds, the inset town plans and heraldic devices of his maps and modifying the Camden text in the atlas he assured its success and lasting appeal.

This highly decorative antique map of the Channel Islands was Drawn and engraved by John Rapkin.  The illustrations were drawn by H. Winkles and engraved by E. Radclyffe.  Published circa 1860 by John Tallis and Co.
